Indeed the Greek word for sin has a basic sense of missing a mark, as in your revised text; it is the first sense for the verb hamartano in the standard Greek dictionary of Liddell-Scott-Jones. This is noted in Kittel TDNT
I p.293. But it appears that the most common Hebrew word for sin which you do not cite in your first version, ht'- has a closely related sense "to be mistaken, to be found deficient or lacking, to be at fault, to miss a specified goal or mark" (Anchor Bible Dict. VI p.32) An example of the concrete sense is Judges 20:16 about a stone thrown by archers not failing to hit a hair. Other sources have made this point earlier as in the Interpreter's Dict. Bible IV p. 361, 1962, which considers that the concrete sense of missing is basic so that the semantic history of the Greek and Hebrew words would be parallel. Kittel I pp.270-271 surveys the most usual Hebrew terms.
Even in the earliest Greek sources for the word (Homer and poetry), its sense includes but is broader than the concrete one of missing something with a projectile: Chantraine's standard French etymological dictionary of Greek says (my translation): "these terms have in common to indicate an error in judgement, in a gesture, or in conduct, and it is a problem in ancient law to determine what responsibility it commits one to". The other standard (German) etymological dictionary of Greek by H. Frisk addresses the formal history of the word, saying "The formation and derivation are unclear", providing bibliography inaccessible to me at this time.LinguistFriendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02695715246663202212noreply@blogger.com
